What Happened
The Compton City Council voted 3-1-1 to reject a petition to terminate preferential parking in Richland Farms after contentious debate over unverified petition signatures and concerns the prior city manager had withheld the petition since March. The council unanimously voted to put the Republic Services trash collection contract out for competitive bidding (RFP) rather than automatically extending it, ending nearly 20 years without a competitive process. A $381,900 multi-year contract with GovWell Technologies was approved for integrated online permitting, planning, code enforcement, and business licensing software. Residents raised serious concerns about World Oil's environmental impacts near Jefferson Elementary and opposed grandfathering the facility into the General Plan 2045, while other residents addressed issues including rising water bills, street infrastructure damage, and canal cleanliness.
